What is the Noongar Boodjar Youth Wellbeing Project?
We are running a trial to find the best type of care to support the mind, body and spirit of young people.
Participants will be assigned to one of two programs to study how the different methods of care support them in their goals and wellbeing.
Program 1: Health care supported by an outreach health support worker in Perth, which includes using a new online health check tool, and GP care at Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service.
Program 2: Health care with a GP at Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service, following standard procedures.
Who Can Join?
- Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander people aged 15 – 24 years
- Living in or near Perth
- Have high levels of distress. Youth are asked to answer 10 questions
(K10 tool) to measure their distress level.
Benefits of the Trial
The results of this trial may change how health services help young people to achieve a healthy mind and healthy emotions. Young people participating receive a $50 gift card each time they complete their survey (total $150). If extra surveys are needed, more gift vouchers are offered.
What is Involved?
Everyone in the trial is able to receive a mental health care plan. A GP at Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service organises referrals to mental health counselling and support services. Each group receives the care they need for up to 5 months. At three points during the trial, surveys are used to measure health and wellbeing. These happen after joining the trial, at 5 months and at 10 months. These surveys may take 20 or more minutes, over the phone or in person.
Young people in ‘Program 2’ also join a waiting list. They can get ‘Program 1’ care after the 10 month assessment, if desired.
